The Boston City Council is considering a beverage tax instead of focusing on serious problems facing the city. Instead of wasting time and resources to introduce a new tax, the Council should focus on real priorities to make Boston more livable and affordable. Even if the Council passed this tax, it would require the state legislature to pass it – taking more time away from them fixing real problems like housing, crime and homelessness.

With today’s high prices, another tax would hurt Boston’s families and small businesses. Beverage taxes are regressive, disproportionately impacting working families and adding yet another financial burden for those already struggling to make ends meet. As everyday costs skyrocket, this tax would hit working families the hardest, especially in lower-income communities.

It’s time for the City Council to focus on supporting Boston families and small businesses instead of adding new financial burdens.

Boston residents are already stretched thin by rising costs. An expensive new tax is the last thing they can afford.
